Shillong to Dawki — The First Leg
The drive from Shillong to Dawki is itself a remarkable road trip experience. The road descends dramatically from Shillong's elevated plateau through a series of hairpin bends and switchbacks — the landscape changing from pine forests to subtropical vegetation as you lose altitude approaching the Bangladesh border.
Key Stop — Shnongpdeng Village
Just 3 km before Dawki — Shnongpdeng is a beautiful riverside village on the Umngot river with crystal clear water, traditional bamboo bridges, and a very peaceful atmosphere. Worth a 30 minute stop on the way to Dawki.
Dawki — The Crystal River
Dawki's Umngot river is one of India's most extraordinary natural phenomena — the water is so incredibly clear and transparent that boats appear to float in mid air with no water visible beneath them. During the dry season between November and April the clarity is at its absolute most extraordinary — the entire riverbed is clearly visible from the surface creating an almost unreal visual experience.

After the Dawki river experience — Cherrapunji's waterfalls deliver a completely different but equally extraordinary natural spectacle. Here are the must visit waterfalls:
Nohkalikai Falls — India's Tallest Plunge Waterfall
The absolute highlight of Cherrapunji — 340 meters of single cascade dropping into a stunning turquoise green pool. During monsoon the power and volume of water is genuinely awe inspiring. During dry season the falls are reduced but the viewpoint and turquoise pool are still extraordinary.
Start here — arrive at Nohkalikai in the late afternoon light for beautiful photography conditions.
Seven Sisters Falls
Seven simultaneous streams cascading off a 315 meter limestone cliff — one of the most unique waterfall sights in India. Monsoon only phenomenon — plan accordingly.
Bishop Falls
Powerful cascade into a deep forested gorge — very photogenic viewpoint. Easy to combine with Nohkalikai on the same visit.
Dainthlen Falls
Beautiful wide cascade with fascinating Khasi legend — the place where a giant serpent called Thlen was reportedly killed. Unique combination of natural beauty and local mythology.

November to April — Best for Dawki
The Umngot river is at its most crystal clear and extraordinary between November and April — dry season means maximum water clarity and the boat ride experience is at its absolute best. Cherrapunji's waterfalls are reduced during this period but still beautiful.
June to October — Best for Cherrapunji
Monsoon is when Cherrapunji's waterfalls are at their most powerful and dramatic — Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters Falls are extraordinary during peak monsoon. However the Umngot river at Dawki becomes murkier during monsoon due to increased water flow reducing the crystal clear effect.
October to November — Sweet Spot
The best compromise — Cherrapunji's waterfalls still have good post monsoon flow, the Dawki river is beginning to clear after monsoon, and the overall travel conditions are excellent. My personal recommendation for this specific road trip.

- Wear waterproof footwear — Cherrapunji's waterfall viewpoints are extremely slippery

- Take an SUV — the road from Dawki towards Cherrapunji has some rough patches, an SUV is more comfortable
