The road descends slightly towards the southern edge of the Meghalaya plateau and suddenly — seemingly out of nowhere — the entire Bangladesh plains open up in front of you thousands of feet below.

Viewpoints to Stop at on the Way
Mawkdok Dympep Valley Viewpoint — 20 km from Shillong
One of the most spectacular viewpoints on the entire Shillong to Cherrapunji road — Mawkdok offers a dramatic view of a deep forested valley with a river visible far below. The viewpoint has a small market with local Khasi food and handicrafts. Stop here for 20-30 minutes — the view is genuinely extraordinary and the photography opportunities are excellent.
Nohwet Viewpoint — 45 km from Shillong
The first preview of Cherrapunji's dramatic plateau edge — Nohwet viewpoint overlooks a stunning valley with distant Bangladesh plains views on clear days. A good warm up for the even more dramatic viewpoints at Cherrapunji's waterfall sites.
The Waterfalls — What to Visit in Cherrapunji
1. Nohkalikai Falls
India's tallest plunge waterfall at 340 meters — the absolute highlight of any Cherrapunji visit. During monsoon the cascade is thunderingly powerful and the turquoise green pool at the base is extraordinarily beautiful. Non negotiable — this is the first stop in Cherrapunji.
2. Seven Sisters Falls
Seven simultaneous streams cascading off a 315 meter limestone cliff during monsoon — one of the most unique waterfall sights in India. Monsoon only — plan accordingly.
3. Bishop Falls
Powerful cascade into a deep forested gorge — very photogenic viewpoint and easy to combine with Nohkalikai.
4. Dainthlen Falls
Wide cascade with fascinating Khasi legend attached — the place where a giant serpent called Thlen was reportedly killed.
5. Mawsmai Falls and Caves
Beautiful single cascade right next to the famous Mawsmai limestone caves — combine both in one stop for maximum efficiency.
6. Nohwet Falls
Dramatic valley viewpoint waterfall with Bangladesh plains visible in the distance on clear days.

Best Time for the Shillong to Cherrapunji Road Trip
June to October — Monsoon Season
The most dramatic and extraordinary time for this road trip. Cherrapunji's waterfalls are at their absolute most powerful — Seven Sisters Falls only exists during this period and Nohkalikai is truly awe inspiring. The landscape is deep green and incredibly atmospheric. Roads are manageable but carry rain gear and check conditions before leaving Shillong.
November to January — Sweet Spot
Falls still have excellent water flow, skies are clear, the Bangladesh plains views from Cherrapunji's viewpoints are at their clearest and most dramatic, and the drive from Shillong is very comfortable. My personal favorite time for this road trip.
February to May
Water levels reduce significantly — Seven Sisters Falls is largely dry. Nohkalikai still has decent flow. Not the best time for a dedicated waterfall road trip but the drive itself is still beautiful.
Tips for the Shillong to Cherrapunji Road Trip
- Leave Shillong by 6 AM — reach Cherrapunji before morning clouds build up over the plateau and get the best light at Nohkalikai Falls
- Carry rain gear always — Cherrapunji is the wettest place on earth and rain arrives without warning at any time of year
- Wear waterproof footwear — all waterfall viewpoints and paths in Cherrapunji are wet and extremely slippery
- Carry cash — most Cherrapunji waterfall entry points and local restaurants don't accept UPI or cards reliably
- Fill petrol in Shillong — petrol stations in Cherrapunji are limited
